Since the authors of this series, Alison Prince and
Joan Hickson have between them seven children, its hero is, rather naturally a 'real' small boy. Technically, the animaion consist of camera movement over paintings, and editing effects. The paintings are designed to exploit these effects, heightening the dramatic content. Joe in fact seems a very solid, real character.

The first film of the series deals with Joe's family's move to a new house, occasioned by the impending arrival of a new baby.

The last episode sees Joe off on a new venture
- nursery school.
